My First Year with Cocoa: What I've Learned and Why I Love It

Just over a year ago, I did something I never imagined I'd do—I bought the boutique I'd shopped in and loved for years. After a career in science teaching and sports therapy, it might sound like a leap. And it was. But as I approach 50, it felt like exactly the right time for a fresh challenge—and anyone who knows me knows I love a challenge.

Though I had no formal background in retail, I had run a business before, and I’ve always had a strong sense of personal style. I know what I like: classic, well-cut clothes that make you feel good the moment you put them on. As a 6ft tall, pear-shaped woman, I also know how hard it can be to find pieces that actually fit and flatter. That insight has guided me more than anything when choosing what to bring into Cocoa. I love to bring a bit of fun and flair to my outfits—whether it's a pop of leopard print, a quirky pattern, or an unexpected detail that makes an outfit feel uniquely mine.

This first year has been a whirlwind of learning. I’ve talked to so many wonderful customers—about sizing, fabrics, lengths, cuts, and sustainability. Every conversation helps me shape what Cocoa becomes. I’m learning every day what to fill the shop with. I’ve discovered that it’s not just about trends—it’s about how clothes make you feel. And honestly? I love it.

Cocoa has become my happy place. A place where style and comfort meet, where customers feel seen and understood, and where I can share a little joy through fashion. There's still plenty more to learn, but if the past year has taught me anything, it’s that following your instinct—and your passion—can lead you somewhere pretty wonderful.

Here's to year two.

Love,
Dani xx
